Licensing Requirements for the State of California

Low-Voltage/Limited-Energy License: A statewide license is required for installation and maintenance of systems that do not exceed 91 volts. This license is classified as a C-7 license, a low-voltage systems contractors license.

Electrician: A statewide electrician license is required.

An "alarm company operator" means any person who, for any consideration whatsoever, engages in business or accepts employment to install, maintain, alter, sell on premises, monitor, or service alarm systems or who responds to alarm systems except for any alarm agent.

Additional Information:
A license is required for installation and monitoring a security system. An "alarm company operator" is defined as any person who, for any consideration whatsoever, engages in business or accepts employment to install, maintain, alter, sell on premises, monitor or service alarm systems or who responds to alarm systems except for any alarm agent. An "alarm company operator" includes any entity retained by a licensed alarm company operator, a customer or any other person or entity to monitor one or more alarm systems, whether or not the entity performs any other duties within the definition of an alarm company operator. Exemptions include any person employed exclusively and regularly by any employer who does not provide contract alarm services for other entities or persons, in connection with the affairs of that employer only and where there exists an employer-employee relationship.

Branch office must be registered & supervised by a designated branch office manager. An application must be completed for branch & an alarm agent for employee

Fire Alarm Company Operators must be licensed by the CSLB. Security company operators (licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services) who install, maintain, monitor, sell, alter, or service alarm systems are exempt.

A foreign or domestic corporation shall complete a certification showing that it has fulfilled the filing requirements of the California Secretary of State.

Central Station Monitoring License Required: YES

Central Station Operator Requirements
"Alarm Agent" means a person employed by an alarm company operator whose duties include selling on premises, altering, installing, maintaining, moving, repairing, replacing, servicing, responding, or monitoring an alarm system, or a person who manages or supervises a person employed by an alarm company to perform any of the duties described in this subdivision or any person in training for any of the duties described in this subdivision.

Requirement for Manager: Qualified manager is an individual in active control, management and direction of business. An officer or RME (responsible managing employee) actively engaged in the company, 32 hours per week.
