Default Different standards

We were contracted to do fiber testing at a site. The specs call for 2db or less loss for tier 1 testing but our meter (Fluke DTX-1800) puts the test parameters at 1.54 & some of the tests fail but are still below 2 db loss.

Suggestions?

ASub, Welcome to Low Voltage Talk. Without looking at the reports, I'm assuming you're using TIA standards which would show light loss over the distance of the fiber. Being the your specs call for 2db or less, you could set it to test for IEEE standards if you know the application they will be using or set up a custom test whcih I wouldn't recommend. The DTX-1800 is a great tester using it's defaults. IEEE would increase the loss level per the application but then you may get PASS results that are actually above the 2db threshold.

I would leave you settings based on TIA & inform the owner that although the reports do indeed fail TIA, they pass their specs of 2db or less.

Anyone else have an opinion for ASub?

Hi ASub,
Few questions for you.
Did you install the fiber at this site?
How long were the segments of fiber (end-to-end) for the tests?
What testing method were you using?
