ProIT has a spectacular aura aboutProIT has a spectacular aura about
Default MagicJack

Has anyone tried the MagicJack? Appears to be taking hold as a VoIP solution rather inexpensively. The company took down their forum but an unofficial site has replaced it with some very innovation features of the device...

As I went to get the URL to post, http://unofficialmagicjack.forum2u.org/

It now has a banner & redirection link to http://www.magicjacksupport.com/

Thoughts anyone?

We have a family member using it and it works but is very dependant on the computer speeds and Internet connection.

Sometimes (regularly) we will be talking and they just plum wont hear us. They have a basic computer and are not literate so I just figure "slow computer, spyware issues, bad cabling - Magic Jack no worky good!"

Not sure how it would work on a clean high speed system...

Cheap enough though!

Fact It works

Interesting Subject. I just purchased one for a family member overseas and one for my mom..Seems to work great but is dependant on a good computer.

I had never heard of this company until I saw this post on here. After reading this post I have seen commercial after commercial on TV about this product with the claim that even your Grandma can hook it up.

Is it a safe assumption it is trying to compete with Skype?

Hot Here is the link to purchase magicJack on a free one month trial.

Call me crazy, but I'm always interested in checking out new technologies and gadgets, so I went ahead and purchased two of these MagicJacks. I'll test them and give you guys some feedback on whether they work well or not.

They did not ask me to chose a telephone number when I signed up, so I'm curious as to how they will assign a telephone number. Perhaps they will do it when I set up the account after I get the devices. We shall see...

Here is the link for the free trial: http://www.magicjack.com/4/index.asp

From what I've read Steve you'll be able to do that when the software loads...

Not sure which site I was on but they show the available area codes in your local areas (I found mine - you might find yours) I'll look for that site...

Cool

Hey Thanks Jim, I'm wondering if when you have the usb jack plugged in will it ring the phone? Then you could set it up for an area code outside your area and give the impression you have a local service office. That would be a nice feature for guys who want a local number in another location so the customers don't have to call long distance. I know you can already do this with VoIP service like Vonage.

Will it call international as well? That would be cool. I'll just have to wait until I get the two jacks and read all the details and try it out. Perhaps this type of service will eventually continue to drive the monthly telephone fees down.

I'll post here and let you know how it works out as soon as I receive it and give it a try.

We have tested the Magic Jack with several telephone systems - NOT RECCOMENDED. It is okay for a simple "stand alone" application but trouble when interfacing with a telephone system.

If you are looking for a local number for a different city try: tollfreeforwarding.com - works great and a fair price.

If you are looking at making allot of long distance/international calls look at VoSKY. Great application if you have several lines and the need to make LD and INTL calls. We pay $120.00 a year with unlimited LD and INTL - great voice quality as well.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the information, Where were you yesterday before I placed my order?! I got the 30 day trial and I'll test it then cancel it if it doesn't work.

I'm going to call you next week about the ESI phone system in our office, I want to discuss having you install it. Thanks

Steve

Let me know your experience with the Magic Jack - by the way it works poorly with the ESI and 99.9 % of all phone systems out there.

I look forward to your call

MagicJack is VOIP without QoS. It depends ENTIRELY on the quality or your internet connection. I have been installing VOIP for 3 years and MagicJack and Skype are examples of the potential that the future holds. The bad thing is that MagicJack and Skype are available in wireless form. If one combines this potential for Wireless voice (cell phone) with hosted pbx, the communications horizon changes for contractors.

I bought one at Radio Shack, no shipping & it came with the first year for $40. Seems to work just fine. You have to utilize 10 digit dialing but we're heading there anyway. Your Internet connection definitely makes a difference. If I fire up a VPN connection, VoIP is unusable but hooking it to a PC that's not used in that way hasn't given us a problem & you just can't beat the price.

I do not need to tell you that this is a HORRIBLE thing. This is a hosted PBX that is FREE. ANY phone can receive calls routed to that number. Everyone who was thinking that GOOGLE was off their rocker when the bought part of the 3G spectrum better think on this. Google already has their own cell phone and applications that run on all carriers phone.

Magic Jack is just intended to replace your home phone - if you can put up with lousy quality from time to time its not a bad deal. IMO if you want a better quality move towards Skype for the single line, much better quality.

I would agree with LaneComm's comment. The Magic Jack works but it if you have any other application running like a streaming quotes feed from E*Trade or TDAmeritrade at the same time the user is trying to talk...well...it sounds pretty shoody at best. But for $20, it's better than giving your hard earned $$$ to AT&T.

My sister in law uses it in columbia to communicate with us. Onseveral occasions there is a loud beep that intermittently goes off in the middle of conversations. also on one or 2 occasions there appears to be cross talk on the lines. definitely not the most ideal solution for use on an alarm system.
